Roll-on vs stick vs spray deodorant packaging:
mechanism, MOQ and lead time for a natural brand.

A natural deodorant brand picks a format for reasons of ritual and plastic — and then discovers the format has a mechanism, the mechanism has tolerances, and the formula decides which mechanism survives. This guide explains the three mechanisms in engineering terms, matches them to the common natural formula types, and gives the minimum and days for each.

Short answer

Roll-on: a 19–35 mm PP, PE or stainless-steel ball in a snap-fit housing on a 30–100 ml bottle, sealed at rest by a soft seat ring in the cap — for liquid and gel natural formulas; from ~500 pieces, 7–25 days. Twist-up stick: a propel-repel spiral elevator driving a carrier cup, 50–75 g — for solid baking-soda, magnesium and wax formulas; low thousands stock, 5,000–10,000 moulded-in colour, 15–25 days. Spray: a stock 12.5–24 mm fine-mist sprayer at 0.1–0.2 ml per shot on glass, PETG or aluminium — for alcohol-based formulas, which rule out PET above ~30% ethanol; ~2,000 printed, 7–25 days plus sprayer in parallel. Sprayed colour on any of them is 2,000–5,000 per shape and 30–40 days.

Roll-on: how the ball works

A roll-on is the simplest of the three. A ball of 19–35 mm sits mostly inside a snap-fit PE, PP or PC socket and turns freely; product wets the exposed surface as it rolls. Two tolerances are the whole product: too loose leaks in a bag, too tight will not roll — and a socket that rolls on water can seize on a 2,000–50,000 mPa·s gel. At rest the seal is not the ball; it is a soft seat ring inside the screw cap that presses the ball down onto the socket, which is what stops an alcohol or perfume roll-on evaporating on shelf. Ball, housing and neck are one system and are specified together, never separately.

Twist-up stick: how the elevator works

A stick uses a propel-repel spiral elevator: turning the base rotates a threaded spiral (metal or plastic) that drives a carrier cup up to present the solid and back down to retract it. The spiral tolerance is the whole product — a cheap elevator wobbles, advances unevenly, and fails the 76 cm drop test and the customer. The formula matters twice. A natural solid built on baking soda, magnesium, arrowroot and waxes softens with heat — a 45°C lorry in summer will deform a poorly formulated stick, so the filled pack is held at 48°C for 24–48 h. And baking-soda formulas are alkaline while oil-rich formulas extract plasticisers, so the barrel and cup are PP and the exact formula sits in the exact stick at 48°C for 30 days before production. Plated collars stay exterior-only, with no nickel on skin-contact surfaces.

Spray: how the fine-mist pump works

A deodorant spray is a stock fine-mist sprayer of 12.5–24 mm — pump size chosen to the bottle neck, never the reverse — delivering 0.1–0.2 ml per actuation with a SUS304 spring, on a glass, PET, PETG or aluminium bottle with a screw or crimp collar and overcap. Natural sprays are usually alcohol-based, and that decides the bottle: PET fails above ~30% ethanol, swelling and hazing, so the choice is glass, alcohol-rated PETG or aluminium. Because a sprayer has many small parts and its own tooling is costly, nobody tools a custom sprayer for a launch; the sprayer is stock and the minimum belongs to the bottle print. A sprayer tested on water can stream instead of misting on the real formula, so dose and mist pattern are verified on the actual bulk: 0.1–0.2 ml per shot within 0.02 g, even mist, ≥1,500 actuations, collar torque 58.8–224 N by diameter, and the overcap flip-tested without cracking.

MOQ and lead time: ~2,000 with a screen-printed logo, sprayer from stock, 7–25 days for the bottle plus 5–7 for print, sprayer in parallel; a sprayed bottle colour is 2,000–5,000 and 30–40 days; a metallised collar ~10,000. An aerosol body spray is a separate route — tinplate or aluminium can with internal lacquer — where the gasket compound against the propellant blend is the most important line in the spec.

The rules behind the material column are the same nine that govern every formula on the formula-to-packaging compatibility matrix. Sprayer and pump data are on airless, pump and sprayer specifications.

Private moulds and buffers

Any private mould is 3,000–10,000 pieces plus RMB 25,000–70,000 (≈ USD 3,500–9,700) per component tool and 45–60 days; every quoted cycle is multiplied by 1.3, plus 15 days across Chinese New Year. The published industry floor is 5,000–10,000 per item; the figures above are indicative via partner factories already tooled for small runs. Why a stick is four or five minimums rather than one is in deodorant packaging MOQ from China (2026) and the MOQ index 2026.

The tests that decide the mechanism is right

Deodorant packs fail at the applicator, not the body. Before any minimum is committed, filled samples pass: roll smoothness on the actual gel; elevator full cycles; sprayer dose and mist on the actual liquid; vacuum leak −0.06 / −0.08 MPa and 24 h inverted; 48°C and −15°C for 24–48 h each; 76 cm to 1.5 m drop; the formula at 48°C for 30 days; colour at ΔE under D65 against the family golden sample. The gates are set out on cosmetic packaging quality standards, and the formats on deodorant packaging. Matching the deodorant to the rest of a body line in one spray run is in the haircare and bodycare packaging solution.

Vella is a Guangzhou-based beauty packaging solutions provider — a sourcing partner, not a factory — that routes briefs like this one to vetted partner factories operating to ISO 22716 / GMP, matches the components as one set, and runs the tests above on filled samples before any production run. If a supplier tests the roll-on on water and quotes the stick by the barrel alone, the questions in how to evaluate a China packaging supplier will show it; send your formula type and format via the contact page and the mechanism, materials and per-part minimum come back matched.

Common questions

Which deodorant format is best for a natural baking-soda formula?
A twist-up stick. A solid built on baking soda, magnesium, arrowroot and waxes needs a propel-repel elevator to present it and carries no leak risk. Specify a PP barrel and carrier cup, hold the filled stick at 48°C for 24–48 hours because a 45°C summer lorry deforms a poorly formulated solid, run full up-and-down cycles and a 76 cm to 1.5 m drop, and confirm the alkaline, oil-rich formula in the exact stick at 48°C for 30 days.
How does a roll-on deodorant ball actually seal?
Not by the ball. A 19–35 mm ball sits mostly inside a snap-fit socket and turns freely; at rest the screw cap carries a soft seat ring that presses the ball down onto the socket, which is what stops an alcohol or essential-oil roll-on evaporating. Too loose a socket leaks in a bag, too tight will not roll on a gel, so roll smoothness and vacuum leak are checked on samples filled with the actual formula.
Can I use a PET bottle for an alcohol-based deodorant spray?
Not above about 30% ethanol — PET swells, hazes and deforms. Alcohol-based natural sprays go in glass, alcohol-rated PETG or aluminium, with solvent-grade gaskets and a −0.08 MPa 15-minute leak test with weight loss of 0.5% or less. The sprayer itself is a stock 12.5–24 mm fine-mist unit delivering 0.1–0.2 ml per shot, verified for even mist on the real liquid.
What are the MOQ and lead time for roll-on, stick and spray deodorant packaging?
Roll-on from about 500 pieces undecorated, 7–25 days; a stock stick in the low thousands, 5,000–10,000 in moulded-in colour at 15–25 days plus 3–15 for masterbatch; a spray bottle with a stock sprayer about 2,000 with a printed logo, 7–25 days with the sprayer in parallel. Sprayed colour on any of them is 2,000–5,000 per shape and 30–40 days; anodised aluminium 5,000–10,000 and 25–40 days; a private mould 3,000–10,000 plus tooling and 45–60 days. Multiply quotes by 1.3 and add 15 days across Chinese New Year.
Are plastic-free deodorant formats available at low minimums?
Paperboard push-up sticks sit in the low thousands as a typical partner-factory range, with a cutting die and print plates rather than a mould, and 15–25 days after artwork approval. Anodised aluminium shells are 5,000–10,000 and 25–40 days, and a second anodising batch rarely matches the first without a sealed control sample. PCR-PP sticks and refillable cartridge systems are the middle route.
