Which format for which product.
Wash-off products are used in a wet hand, in a shower, upside down. Leave-on products are dosed. That single difference decides most of the table: wash-off gets a squeezable body and a one-hand cap; leave-on gets a pump. Volumes below are the sizes partner factories hold as stock moulds; 500 ml shampoo with 400 ml conditioner is the classic pair.
| Product | Format and size | Material | Closure | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shampoo | Bottle 250-500 ml (stock 200 · 250 · 300 · 400 · 500 · 750 · 1,000 ml) | HDPE (light, squeezable, shower-safe); PET for a clear gel; PCR-HDPE 30-100% for a recycled claim | Disc-top or flip-top, 24/410 or 28/410 | HDPE takes a soft-touch matte finish; the coating must pass a wet-rub test, because a cheap matte spray marks in the shower |
| Conditioner / hair mask (rinse-off) | Bottle 250-400 ml; tottle (inverted, cap-down) for thick masks; PP double-wall jar for salon masks | HDPE; PP for jars | Flip-top with a large orifice; disc-top for thinner conditioners | Conditioner viscosity is at the top of the emulsion range (roughly 2,000-50,000 mPa·s); orifice size is a sample decision, not a catalogue one |
| Body wash / shower gel | Bottle 250-500 ml; 750-1,000 ml for family and refill sizes | HDPE or PET (clear gels show the colour); PCR options | Flip-top, disc-top, or a large lotion pump on the 500 ml and above | The 1,000 ml HDPE with a large pump is the standard large-format wash-off pack |
| Body lotion / leave-in | Bottle 200-400 ml | HDPE frosted, PETG for a heavier clear feel, PP opaque | Lotion pump 2.0 or 3.5 cc per stroke on 24/410 or 28/410; guide-block, screw or clip lock head | Pump output ≥95% of fill for aqueous bulks; test with the actual lotion, not water |
| Treatment, leave-in cream, styling | Tube Ø40-Ø45, 80-150 g; Ø50-Ø60, 150-250 g | Single-layer PE for plain creams; five-layer EVOH co-extrusion for oil- or fragrance-led treatments | Flip-top (200-cycle hinge) or screw cap | Tube length is set to hit the fill at the diameter, so brief both: "Ø45, 150 g" |
| Refill | Spout pouch 250-1,000 ml; or 1,000 ml HDPE bottle | Mono-PE recycle-ready laminate; PCR laminate options | Spout with screw cap; tear notch | Up to 80% less plastic than a rigid bottle; pair with a refill-pouch-compatible HDPE bottle |
The compatibility rules override the table. Alcohol above about 30% attacks PET (styling waters, some scalp tonics): use glass or alcohol-rated PETG. Essential-oil-rich treatments attack AS, and oxygen-sensitive actives want an EVOH structure. The full set of rules, with the failure behind each, is on the formula-to-packaging compatibility matrix.
HDPE, PET, PETG or PCR: what each one gives you.
| Material | Look and feel | Squeeze | Chemical and thermal | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HDPE (extrusion blow-moulded) | Opaque, natural or coloured; matte and soft-touch coatings take well | Best: wall can be specified thin enough to squeeze and thick enough to feel solid | Density 0.941-0.960 g/cm³; softening point 125-135°C; good chemical resistance; recycling code 2 | The default for shampoo, conditioner, body wash; sprayed coatings scuff on HDPE, so a wet-rub test is written into the spec |
| PET (injection-stretch blow) | Clear, glass-like; the cheapest mainstream transparent resin | Moderate; rigid at thicker walls | Fails above about 30% ethanol (swells and hazes); neck is formed at the preform stage and does not change during blowing | Clear shower gels, body oils without high alcohol, toners |
| PETG | Clear, heavier, premium hand-feel; thick-wall clarity | Low; treat as rigid | Alcohol-rated grades exist; food-contact compliant | Premium body lotion, hair oil; costs more than PET |
| PCR-HDPE / PCR-PET | Base tone runs grey or beige and shifts by lot; mid and dark colours hide it, white and pastels do not | As the virgin resin | As the virgin resin; GRS or equivalent certificate from the resin supplier on every order | 30% is the entry point, 50% the credible-claim standard, 100% on select formats; see the sustainable and refillable solution |
| PP | Opaque, slightly waxy; jars and caps | Rigid | Handles pH below 4; lower dimensional precision than PET | Hair mask jars, caps, pump components |
One rule from our matched-collection work: moulded-in white and sprayed white do not match each other. Moulded-in colour is pigment in the resin; sprayed colour is a coating; they differ in depth and in how they catch light. A shampoo and conditioner pair must be sprayed in one run against a master swatch, or both moulded from the same masterbatch lot. Colour is judged at ΔE under D65 light against the signed golden sample, never by eye.
Tube specifications for treatments and masks, Ø40 to Ø60.
Hair and body tubes sit at the large end of the standard diameter range. The barrier decision is the same one that governs skincare: a single-layer PE tube passes oxygen at roughly 150-300 units, a five-layer EVOH co-extruded tube at 0.2-1.2, about two orders of magnitude lower. Plain conditioners and hand creams do not need the barrier; oil-rich or fragrance-led treatments, and anything with an oxidising active, do. The full print-area table for Ø13-Ø60 is on the cosmetic tube specifications page; the rows relevant to haircare and bodycare are below.
| Parameter | Value for haircare and bodycare tubes |
|---|---|
| Diameters and fills | Ø38, Ø40, Ø45 for 80-150 g (cleanser, mask, hair treatment, body cream); Ø50, Ø55, Ø60 for 150-250 g (body lotion, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel). Standard fills 80, 100, 110, 120, 130, 150, 180, 200, 250 g |
| Structures | Single-layer PE co-extruded (OTR 150-300 units); five-layer PE / tie / EVOH 15-20 µm / tie / PE (OTR 0.2-1.2 units); ABL with 12 µm or 9 µm foil for strongly fragranced or solvent-bearing bulks; PBL (PE / PE / EVOH / PE / PE) foil-free and squeezes back |
| Printable area, mm (front centre / unwrapped centre / back centre / total unwrap) | Ø40 = 31.00 / 62.00 / 93.00 / 124.00 · Ø45 = 34.90 / 69.80 / 104.70 / 139.60 · Ø50 = 38.90 / 77.80 / 116.70 / 155.60 · Ø55 = 42.75 / 85.50 / 128.25 / 171.00 · Ø60 = 46.50 / 93.00 / 139.60 / 186.00 |
| Caps | Flip-top (most common on wash-off and body), screw flat-top, nozzle; most tube factories buy caps from a second supplier, so allow for it in the timeline |
| End seal | Straight or angled; seal width 3.5-4.5 mm; height variation ≤0.5 mm; centred within ±1 mm; batch code embossed in the seal |
| Filling | Tail-fill: confirm the filling nozzle passes the bore; head-fill: confirm carton orientation; state hot-fill or ambient |
| QC thresholds | End-seal ≥20 N/cm; 0.15 MPa air for 3 s, no burst; 10 kg plate 5 min, no leak; crush 15 kgf for 3 s above Ø25; flip-top hinge 200 cycles plus ±30° twist; diameter tolerance 0.5 mm, length 1.5 mm, wall 0.05 mm; weight ±10%, brim-full capacity ±5% |
| Commercial | Industry floor 5,000-10,000 per SKU, 3,000 negotiable; plates approx. USD 30-45 per design; 15-20 days from sample-tube approval; ±10% over/under delivery |
24/410, 28/410, disc-top, flip-top, and the pump test.
A neck finish is written diameter / thread series. The first number is the outer thread diameter in millimetres; the second is the GPI/SPI series: 400 means one full thread turn, 410 means 1.5 turns, 415 means a tall neck with two turns. Haircare and bodycare bottles almost all run 24/410 (200-300 ml) and 28/410 (300-1,000 ml), because 1.5 turns gives enough engagement for a heavier closure or a pump on a bottle that is handled wet. A 24/410 pump will not seat on a 24/415 neck even though both are 24 mm. Specify the neck on the bottle drawing first, then buy the closure to it; the full drawing notation (T, E, I, S, X) is on the neck finish and closure standards page.
| Closure | Neck | What it is for | Test threshold |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disc-top | 24/410, 28/410 | One-finger open on shampoo, body wash, conditioner; low profile, cleans easily | Opening force 0.5-3.5 N·m; reverse torque ≥2.5 N·m; seal at 0.6-1.2 N·m application then -0.05 to -0.06 MPa for 3 min and 24 h inverted, no leak |
| Flip-top | 24/410, 28/410; tube caps on Ø40-Ø60 | Shower-friendly snap closure; orifice sized to viscosity (small for thin, large for conditioner) | Hinge 100 cycles at 180° on bottle caps, 200 cycles on tube caps, no fracture, no change in snap; opening 0.5-3.5 N·m |
| Screw cap with orifice plug | 24/410, 28/410 | Hair oils and thin tonics; small-hole plug for water-thin, large-hole for lotion | Opening torque 0.2-0.7 N·m; no thread strip at rated tightening |
| Lotion pump | Ø24, Ø28 (also Ø18-Ø38 available) | Body lotion, leave-in, large-format wash-off; output steps 1.0/2.0 cc, 3.5 cc, 5.0 cc; guide-block, screw, clip or no lock | See pump test sheet below |
| Trigger sprayer | 28/410 typically | Leave-in sprays, detanglers; a haircare and home-care format | Buy stock units; check the body-to-shroud joint; the rubber seal hardens below 0°C, so specify the elastomer against the formula and route |
The pump test sheet. A lotion pump has around eleven parts, which is why stock (common-mould) pumps are the default and why the pump is sampled before it goes near a filling line. The numbers a partner factory signs against:
| Test | Pass threshold |
|---|---|
| Service life | ≥1,500 continuous actuations |
| Dry-pump (air) strokes | <8 strokes for bottles up to 1,000 ml; <10 above |
| Priming with product | ≤5 strokes aqueous; ≤10 strokes non-aqueous |
| Output per stroke | Fill to nominal, prime 15 strokes, weigh, press 50 strokes, weigh; (before − after) ÷ 50; repeat three times. Single stroke ±15%; run average within 5-10% of specified dose. Standard pumps average ≥3 g per stroke; 250 ml styling-gel pumps 1-2 ml |
| Dispensing efficiency | ≥95% aqueous; ≥90% non-aqueous of the fill recovered |
| Return time | Actuator returns in ≤3 s; springy, no sticking or dead travel |
| Dip tube | Length tolerance +2/-1 mm; 5 mm clearance from the base on a 250 ml bottle |
| Spring | External-spring pump where the spring must never touch the formula; internal-spring pumps are cheaper but need a compatible spring alloy |
What fails in the field is the seal at the glass or steel ball under the spring: if it leaks, product flows back on each stroke and the pump starts losing doses. It is visible at incoming inspection sampling. Full pump and sprayer data are on the airless, pump and sprayer specifications page.
The tests a filled bottle passes before it ships.
These sit under the four inspection gates (IQC, IPQC, FQC, OQC) and the signed golden-sample rule on our QC standards page. For haircare and bodycare the ones that matter most are the leak test, because the pack lives upside down in a shower, and the drop test, because a 500 ml bottle is heavy.
| Test | Method | Pass threshold |
|---|---|---|
| Vacuum leak | Filled unit in a vacuum chamber, lying and inverted on white paper | -0.08 MPa held 15 min, loss ≤0.5% (volatile formulas); -0.06 MPa for standard emulsions; -0.05 MPa for 5 min as the line quick-check; no trace on the paper |
| Thermal cycling | Oven and freezer, filled | 48°C and -15°C, 24-48 h each; no cracking, warping, leakage or colour change after 2 h recovery |
| Drop | Filled, capped, onto concrete | 76 cm to 1.5 m by format; bottle with closure 1.5 m at 45°; no functional damage |
| Seal, static | Filled, capped, inverted | 24 h, no leakage; plus 20 strong shakes brim-full |
| Formula compatibility | Component in contact with the actual bulk | 48°C / 30 days beside ambient and cold controls; no discolouration, odour, swelling, cracking or decoration attack |
| Decoration adhesion | 3M 600 tape over print and hot-stamp; 3M 810 over cross-hatched spray | Pressed 10 passes, pulled at 45°; no lift; hot-stamp single-point loss ≤0.5 mm² |
| Soft-touch coating | Wet-rub and abrasion on sprayed HDPE samples | No marking or coating loss; pencil hardness ≥2H on sprayed surfaces |
| Wall and weight | Calliper, balance | Blow-moulded wall ≥0.3 mm with wall-thickness variation under 0.3 mm; weight tolerance ±1 g on the average of 10 |
| Colour | Against the signed golden sample, D65 light | ΔE within the tolerance agreed per material; shampoo and conditioner judged side by side in one hand |
| Heavy metals | Third-party laboratory | Pb + Cd + Hg + Cr(VI) ≤100 ppm (EU 94/62/EC) |
Acceptance is arithmetic. Defects are classed critical / major / minor with AQL agreed before production (critical effectively zero, sampling to ISO 2859-1 general level II) and surfaces are graded A / B / C, so the face on the shelf is held tighter than the base.
Minimum and lead time, component by component.
A pump bottle is a bottle, a pump and an overcap, often from three plants with three separate minimums, so the honest table is per component. The figures are industry floors and partner-factory practice; as a sourcing partner we route each component to a factory already tooled for small runs, which is where the lower numbers come from. Where no small-run route exists (plated closures, extruded tubes) we cannot beat the floor either.
| Component | Realistic minimum | Factory-gate lead time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDPE / PET stock bottle, undecorated | From about 500 pcs | 7-25 days (7-10 if in stock; 15-25 if a run is needed) | Stock colours: natural, white, black, clear |
| Stock bottle + screen-printed logo | 2,000 pcs | +5-7 days (plate making 2-3 days) | Printing is not what raises minimums; ≤2 decoration passes per part |
| Stock bottle, sprayed matte or custom colour | 2,000-5,000 pcs per component geometry | 30-40 days | A spray minimum attaches to the shape: shampoo and conditioner bottles are two set-ups unless they share one body |
| Moulded-in custom colour | 5,000-10,000 pcs | 15-25 days plus masterbatch 3-15 days | Full material changeover and purge on the moulding line |
| Disc-top / flip-top, stock (white, black, natural) | Low thousands with the bottle | 7-25 days | Custom colour follows the spray rule; electroplated or metallic closures stay at 10,000 |
| Lotion pump, stock | Low thousands; matched to bottle quantity | 20-30 days (pump sub-assemblies come from separate lines) | Custom-colour actuators follow the spray minimum; private pump tooling is rarely worth it |
| Tube, printed | 5,000-10,000 per SKU; 3,000 negotiable | 15-20 days from sample approval | Plates approx. USD 30-45; ±10% over/under; cap from a second supplier |
| Refill spout pouch, printed | Stock film route; quantity set by the print run | 15-20 days; +5-7 days for cylinders or plates on new artwork | Stock film and print 25-35 days door to factory gate; custom structure or spout tooling 55-75 days |
| Full-wrap label / shrink sleeve | 500 pcs | Short | The way to get full colour under the spray minimum; BOPP or PP film for anything used in a shower, never paper |
| Shipping cartons | 100 pcs | Short | Rarely the constraint |
| New bottle mould (your own shape) | 3,000-10,000 pcs plus tooling RMB 25,000-70,000 | Mould 45-60 days; full programme 90-120 days | 30/40/30 payment; the brand owns the mould; see mould cost and ownership |
Add transit and calendar to every line: sea freight 25-40 days to Europe or the US East Coast, 15-20 days to the West Coast; a ×1.3 buffer on the quoted cycle; +15 days on any order touching Chinese New Year (2027: 6 February); September-November is peak season. For a Q1 launch the order must be confirmed with a signed golden sample and deposit by the first week of December. The whole chain is laid out on the lead time and China production calendar page, and the route logic on real minimum order quantities by route.
Export packing for bottles, pumps and tubes.
Empty haircare packaging is volume, not weight, so sea freight is typically 5-8 times cheaper per cubic metre than air, and the carton specification is what protects the sprayed finish for 30 days in a container. The packing standard below is written into the order and checked at the OQC gate; the full flute, grammage and FEFCO tables are on the export packing and transit standards page.
| Item | Specification |
|---|---|
| Bottles, caps, pumps | Single-wall B or C flute (3-5 mm) for light plastic components; double-wall (6-8 mm) for any stack over 1.5 m; FEFCO 0201 regular slotted case |
| Sprayed and soft-touch bottles | Polythene bag or tissue interleaf so coatings do not rub against each other; carton moisture ≤8% |
| Tubes | Honeycomb-board layer and a moisture barrier holding humidity ≤50% RH; tubes packed upright, caps on |
| Pumps | Bagged in inner polythene against dust; dip tubes protected; sampled at IQC on arrival at the filler |
| Tape and seal | Acrylic adhesive tape for sea freight (ages well, damp-resistant); H-seal on centre and end seams; bond builds 15-150% in the first 24 h, so cartons are not loaded straight off the taping line |
| Test protocol | ISTA 3A-style drop and vibration on the packed carton; pallet stacking to GB/T 4857 (ISO 2234 equivalent) with the stacking limit printed on the carton; BCT safety factor 3-5 for sea |
| Marks | Item code, quantity, batch number matching the inspection report, inspector code, gross and net weight, dimensions, sequence number, destination, handling marks; a carton without a batch number is rejected at OQC |
How the six-module program applies to haircare and bodycare.
Every solution page on this site runs the same six modules, because a shampoo bottle and a perfume flacon fail in the same places: an unwritten spec, an untested pump, an unsigned sample, an unowned mould, an uninspected lot, an unpacked carton. Here is what each module does for a 200-500 ml haircare and bodycare range.
| Module | What we do for this category | Deliverable |

The process from brief to delivery, with where each module sits, is on how we work. Empty packaging only: filling, filled-goods shipping and any dangerous-goods classification of the formula remain the brand's responsibility.
A sourcing partner, not a factory.
Vella is a Guangzhou-based beauty packaging solutions provider that helps indie and emerging cosmetic brands specify, source, sample, tool, quality-control and ship complete packaging systems — bottles, jars, tubes, pumps, closures and cartons — from vetted Chinese partner factories operating to ISO 22716 / GMP, with published engineering standards and low minimums.
No single Chinese factory makes HDPE bottles, lotion pumps, extruded tubes, spout pouches and cartons well; they are different industrial processes in different towns. Buying the range through one partner is what lets decoration be batched, the shampoo and conditioner colour be held to one standard, and five minimums be met together rather than five times over. Partner factories operate to ISO 22716 / GMP; we publish the thresholds so acceptance is arithmetic.
