Custom printed cosmetic tubes from China carry an industry floor of 5,000–10,000 tubes per SKU — large tube factories hold at 10,000, and 3,000 is sometimes negotiable on a stock body through partner factories already tooled for small runs. Printing plates cost RMB 200–300 (≈USD 28–45) per design; there is no mould because tube bodies and most caps run on public tooling. Production is 15–20 days from sample-tube approval, deliveries are ±10% over or under and invoiced on delivered quantity. A sprayed cap adds a 2,000–5,000 floor of its own; a plated cap about 10,000; a special cap shape needs a private mould at roughly USD 3,000–10,000.
Why a tube MOQ is a run, not a pick
A PP jar or a glass bottle exists before you order it: a stock component in a stock colour sits in a warehouse and can be picked from about 500 pieces. A tube does not. The sleeve is extruded to your diameter and length, headed, printed and capped in one production run, and the print is part of that run rather than a decoration added afterwards. So the minimum is the shortest run a tube line will set up for — the extruder, the heading machine and the offset or flexo press each need a changeover — and that is why the floor sits at 5,000–10,000 per SKU where a jar sits at 500. One large tube maker publishes "MOQ typically starts from 10,000 pieces"; that figure is the truth about its line.

Read the table per component. A tube programme is a sleeve, a cap and usually a carton, and the cap comes from a second supplier: most tube factories extrude bodies and buy caps, so a sprayed or plated cap carries its own minimum and its own days. The 10,000 plating floor is the one no supplier moves.
What the plates cost, and what they do not
Tube body print is offset or flexo, up to 8 spot colours or 4-colour process, and each design needs a set of plates. The set costs about RMB 200–300, roughly USD 28–45, and is the only "tooling" on a standard tube — there is no mould, because the sleeve is extruded through public dies by diameter and the cap is injection-moulded from a stock mould. Two things the plate fee does not cover: silk-screen, which uses a screen per colour, gives a raised UV-cured look, and costs more with fewer factories offering it; and hot stamping, which is charged by foil area and is best kept to two passes combined with print. New artwork also adds 5–7 days to the cycle for plates and a printed proof, and a good supplier checks the file before plates are cut — eye-mark position, colours that will not print, barcode orientation, separations that cannot be produced.
The ±10% rule
Every extruded and printed run arrives over or under the contract quantity by up to 10%, and the invoice is for what was delivered. It is industry practice, not a defect, and it comes from the way a line is run: the extruder and press are set up, run to length, and the last good tube is the last tube. Budget for it in both directions — a 10,000 order may land as 9,000 sleeves, so a filling order for exactly 10,000 will be short, and a landing of 11,000 will be billed. Agree in the quote who pays for surplus, and plan fill quantities on the low side.
Lead time and calendar
Production is 15–20 days from approval of the sample tube — one of the shortest cycles in cosmetic packaging — but that figure is node 7 of ten. Add sampling first (a sample tube, then a printed proof, then approval), plates at 2–3 days, and the cap supplier's lead time, which may be 5–20 days for a sprayed or plated cap and 45–60 for a private-mould cap. Multiply the quoted schedule by 1.3 for a date you can plan on, add 15 days across Chinese New Year (6 February 2027), then add sea freight of 18–25 days to the US West Coast, 30–35 to the UK and Northern Europe or 20–25 to Australia plus 5–10 days of clearance at each end. Three ways under the headline number
- Negotiate 3,000 on a stock body. Some partner tube lines already tooled for short runs will set up for 3,000 of a common diameter (Ø30, Ø35, Ø40) in a stock cap. The unit price runs 20–40% above the bulk price; that premium is the cost of not financing 10,000 tubes.
- Share the run across SKUs. Three products on one diameter and one structure can sometimes run as one extrusion with a plate change, so 3 × 3,000 presents the line with 9,000. Each design still needs its own plates.
- Move the artwork to a label or sleeve. A printed stock tube in white or natural with a digital label or shrink sleeve gives full-colour artwork from about 100–500 pieces, changeable between batches.
