"Sustainable packaging" covers half a dozen very different things — each with its own cost, certification and recyclability reality. Here's how to choose the eco route that actually fits your brand and your market.
Chinese factories offer a full range of eco packaging: PCR plastics (up to 100%), bamboo, sugarcane bioplastic, mono-material and refillable systems. The right choice depends on your format, market and the certifications you need. Insist on verifiable evidence — a stated PCR percentage with GRS certification, not a vague "eco-friendly" claim — and design for recyclability if you're selling into the EU under PPWR.
"Eco" is not one decision. These are the five routes Chinese factories actually offer, and they're not interchangeable:
| Route | What it is | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| PCR plastic | Post-consumer recycled PET/PP/PE, 25–100% content | Drop-in sustainability with minimal design change |
| Mono-material | Single-polymer pack designed to be recyclable | EU PPWR recyclability targets |
| Refillable | Replaceable pod or inner vessel, reusable outer | Premium brands, reuse commitments |
| Bamboo / natural | Bamboo sleeves or caps, usually over a plastic liner | Natural aesthetic and tactile premium feel |
| Bioplastic | Sugarcane PE, PLA and similar plant-based polymers | Plant-based positioning (check end-of-life) |
PCR is the most common eco route because it drops into existing formats with little design change. PET bottles can reach 100% PCR while keeping clarity and strength. The catch is verification: "eco-friendly" on a website means nothing on its own. Ask for two things every time:
Also budget for compatibility testing. Recycled resins can behave differently with certain actives, so sample with your real formula before scaling.
The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is reshaping what "compliant" means — pushing recyclability, recycled content and reuse. The compliant routes are mono-material designed for recyclability, certified PCR content, and refillable systems. Decide your PPWR approach before committing to tooling, because retrofitting recyclability later is expensive.
Vella is a sourcing & solutions company, not a factory. For eco briefs we match each format to ISO 22716 / GMP-compliant partner factories with verifiable sustainability credentials — GRS-certified PCR, genuine mono-material design, or refillable systems — rather than relying on packaging-level marketing claims. We'll tell you honestly which eco route is viable at your MOQ and which is greenwashing. Explore our eco & sustainable and refillable formats.
