Why Lip Packaging Matters

The applicator changes
how the formula performs.

Lip packaging is unusual in cosmetics — the applicator (wand type, tip shape, fibre density) directly affects how the formula deposits on the lip. A plumping gloss needs a different tip than a sheer lip oil. We help brands spec the applicator to match the formula texture and the positioning story, not just the outer shape they like.

Sourcing Intelligence

The wand is where most lip brands get let down.

The wand is a functional component — it has to dispense the right amount of product, return cleanly to the tube without dripping, and last through thousands of application cycles. Vella tests wand performance before production approval, not after.

01

Wand Return Test

After each application, the wand must return to the tube without dripping. We test 50 consecutive open/close cycles per sample. Any wand that transfers product to the cap thread fails our standard.

02

Tip Delivery Consistency

The tip must deliver consistent product per stroke across different formula temperatures (15°C–35°C). Cold formula is thicker; we test at both extremes to ensure consistent consumer experience year-round.

03

Cap Torque & Security

The cap must resist 2.5 Nm opening torque (child-safe), stay closed under bag pressure (1 kg compression test), and open cleanly with one hand. We test all three before production approval.

04

Colour Fastness on Mechanism

Hot-stamp and silk-screen on ABS mechanisms can transfer to formula or hands if the UV cure is insufficient. We test colour fastness with a 24h formula soak before approving decoration.

Questions

Frequently asked about lip packaging.

What is the difference between a lip gloss tube and a lip gloss wand?
A lip gloss tube is the outer packaging — typically cylindrical PP or ABS in the shade of the brand. The wand is the applicator that comes inside the tube cap: doe-foot, flat, plumping tip, cushion or brush. We spec them as a matched set — tube outer + wand applicator type + wand fibre material together.
Lip gloss tube and wand applicator range
What colours can I get for a lip gloss tube?
Virtually any Pantone or RAL colour. The tube outer is typically ABS or PP, which can be moulded in custom colours or spray-coated for premium finishes (matte, metallic, soft-touch). Cap and tube body can be different colours — a common and effective brand differentiation technique.

Can I get a lipstick bullet mechanism with a custom shape?
Yes, with a custom mould development investment. Standard stock bullet shapes are available at lower MOQ and faster lead time. Custom shapes require 3,000+ units and a 90-day lead time for mould development and sample approval. Custom shapes are most justified for hero or hero range products rather than full line extensions.
What is the MOQ for a custom lip gloss wand tube?
Custom-decorated stock tubes from 1,000 units. Full custom colour (moulded-in) from 3,000 units. We recommend starting with stock shapes for first launches and moving to custom for subsequent iterations once you have validated the formula and consumer reception.

What tip types are available for a plumping lip gloss?
For plumping products, the most common tip is the oversized doe-foot or cushion tip — both allow product to sit on and around the lips without dragging. Silicone plumping tips with a raised texture are also available and are increasingly popular for the category. Tell us the formula viscosity and we'll recommend the tip that dispenses it correctly.
