A cosmetic folding carton runs on 300–350 gsm GC1 coated board for a 50–100 ml bottle or jar and 400–450 gsm for glass or a multi-product set, written into the spec as the grammage ±10 g/m². On offset print the industry floor is 2,000–5,000 pieces, because below about 1,000 a printer cannot nest the sheet economically; digital print reaches about 100–500 for simple cartons. Tooling is a low-cost cutting die plus one plate per colour. Lead time is 10–15 days after artwork approval (7–12 days digital; 20–30 days including proofing), and colour is accepted at ΔE ≤1.5 under D65 against the signed proof.
Paper weight: what 300, 350 and 400 gsm actually buy you
Grammage is mass per square metre of board, and for a folding carton it is a proxy for stiffness and crush resistance. The board grade for cosmetic cartons is GC1 (or GC2) — a coated virgin-fibre folding boxboard with a white printing face. The working rule from partner converters:
| Product inside | Board and weight | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 50–100 ml plastic bottle, tube or jar | 300–350 gsm GC1 | Stiff enough to protect a light pack and stand on shelf; the cost baseline |
| Glass bottle or heavy jar | 400–450 gsm GC1 | Resists crush in a stacked shipping case; needed where the carton is the only thing between glass and glass |
| Multi-product set as a carton outer | 400–450 gsm GC1, or E-flute 1.5–2 mm with a printed liner | Set weight needs the extra stiffness; E-flute gives mailer-level strength |
| E-commerce mailer or display carton | E-flute micro-corrugated (about 286 flutes per metre) with printed liner | Die-cut, self-locking; flexo on the liner or offset-laminated |
| Any carton for EU / UK retail | As above, with label space left for the recycling mark and the 82-allergen list | Leave the space at artwork stage; a reprint after the first run is the common mistake |
The specification is written as a number with a tolerance — 350 ± 10 g/m² — and checked at IQC on a 100 × 100 mm cut on a balance. A board that arrives at 320 gsm against a 350 spec is a rejection, not a discussion. Board moisture is held at ≤8% at packing, because damp board goes flat and glue lets go on a 30-day sea voyage. The carton is cut to the confirmed bottle drawing, not the CAD: a white dummy is fitted to the actual bottle before the die is made.
MOQ: where 2,000–5,000 comes from
A folding carton has almost no tooling — a cutting die at low cost and one plate per printed colour — so the minimum is set by the press, not by steel. An offset printer lays several cartons on one large sheet, and the make-ready (plates, ink, registration) is a fixed cost whether the run is 800 or 8,000. Below about 1,000 pieces the printer cannot nest the sheet economically, and the practical industry floor for offset CMYK plus Pantone is 2,000–5,000 pieces. Metallised board and speciality stocks do not go below about 1,000 for the same reason.
Digital print has no plates and no make-ready worth the name, so it reaches about 100–500 pieces for simple cartons, sleeves and labels, in 7–12 days. The trade is fewer finish options and slightly lower colour saturation. It is the right route for a launch, a test market or a limited edition; offset is the right route for the reorder.
| Route | Realistic minimum | Tooling | Factory-gate lead time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Folding carton, offset, standard finish | 2,000–5,000 | Cutting die, low cost; plates per colour | 10–15 days after artwork approval; 20–30 days including proofing |
| Folding carton, digital, short run | 100–500 | None | 7–12 days |
| Folding carton + foil + emboss + soft-touch | 2,000–5,000 (no extra floor for the finishes) | Foil die, emboss die | +3–5 days over standard |
| FSC-certified board on any of the above | Same as the route | None; chain-of-custody paperwork per order | Confirm at brief stage — FSC is quoted as standard, not added later |
| Shipping cases (FEFCO 0201) | About 100 | None | 7–10 days |
Two habits keep the number honest. First, ask for the quantity break — 2,000, 3,000, 5,000 — because the unit price on a small offset run is typically 20–40% higher than in bulk, and the difference is the make-ready spread thinner. Second, if a shared finish runs across several SKUs (same board, same laminate, same foil), ask whether the printer can gang the SKUs on one sheet; a shared finish clears one minimum instead of three. All figures are indicative floors from partner-factory practice, confirmed per project — see the MOQ index.
Print: CMYK, Pantone and the ΔE 3–4 failure
A cosmetic carton is printed offset in CMYK plus up to four spot Pantone colours, then laminated (gloss, matte or soft-touch), then embellished (hot stamp, blind emboss, spot UV), then die-cut, creased and glued. The classic failure is colour: a brand colour built in CMYK drifts batch to batch, and a ΔE 3–4 drift between the launch run and the reorder is the complaint every founder eventually files. The fix is procedural, not technical — lock the Pantone reference before plates, sign a printed proof, and accept the run at ΔE ≤1.5 under D65 standard light against that proof, with family components judged side by side in one hand. The decoration options and their set-ups are compared on the decoration process comparison.
The acceptance numbers
A carton is a specification, not a picture. These are the thresholds partner converters work to and the FQC gate checks against the signed golden sample; the full battery is on the QC standards.
| Test | Method | Pass threshold |
|---|---|---|
| Colour | Against signed proof and golden sample under D65 | ΔE ≤1.5; Pantone spot colours approved at press-ready stage |
| Board weight | Balance, 100 × 100 mm cut | Specified grammage ±10 g/m² (e.g. 350 ± 10) |
| Print register | Loupe, 0.1 mm | Main image ≤0.1 mm; secondary ≤1 mm (2 mm on E-flute); overprint ghosting ≤0.5 mm at 30 cm; text ≤0.3 mm; no misregister on the client logo |
| Crease (score) dimension | Steel rule | 0–100 mm: +1/−0 mm; 101–300 mm: +1.5/−0.5 mm; over 300 mm: +2/−1 mm |
| Glue flap | Visual, steel rule | Flap width 15–30 mm; skew ≤5 mm; fibre tear ≥70% of the glued area on peel |
| Die-cut and fold | Visual; fold test | Burr ≤30 mm and no more than 3; cut drift ≤1 mm; tuck tab inserted 5× with damage ≤2 mm²; 180° fold at the score × 5 with no cracking |
| Windows and cut-outs | Steel rule | Position within 3 mm |
| Lamination | Visual and peel | Delamination ≤10 cm²; edge lift ≤2 mm on E-flute |
| Foil / print adhesion | 3M 600 tape, 10 passes, pulled at 45° | No lift; hot-stamp loss ≤0.5 mm²; no ghosting on 10–25% of the image |
| Rub and solvent resistance | Gauze, 10 rubs after 24 h contact with the bulk; 50 strokes of ethanol on shipping marks | No fading, transfer or ink loss |
| Moisture | Carton moisture meter | ≤8% at packing |
| Heavy metals | Third-party laboratory | Pb + Cd + Hg + Cr(VI) ≤100 ppm (EU 94/62/EC) |
| Acceptance | ISO 2859-1 AQL, Level II | Agreed per defect class; 0-accept on colour and structure |
Lead time and transit
From approved artwork, an offset carton is 10–15 days to the factory gate; add 5–7 days when new plates are made, 3–5 days for foil, emboss or soft-touch, and 20–30 days end to end including the white dummy and printed proof. It is the shortest cycle in the pack, so it is sequenced after the primary pack — the die waits for the confirmed bottle — and is rarely the constraint. Multiply the quote by 1.3 for the committed date and add 15 days if it crosses Chinese New Year; the calendar is on lead time and the China production calendar.
Cartons ship flat in single-wall B or C flute cases (3–5 mm), FEFCO 0201, laminated outers with corner protectors, foil and soft-touch surfaces interleaved with tissue or polythene, stacked ≤1.5 m on the pallet with a stacking limit printed on the case. Sea is 18–25 days to the US West Coast and 30–35 to the UK and Northern Europe; the board grades are on export packing and transit standards.
How to brief a carton so the quote is real
- Product inside, with a drawing or a physical sample — the die is cut to the bottle, not the CAD.
- Board grade and grammage with tolerance: GC1 350 ± 10 g/m², or 400–450 for glass or sets.
- Style (tuck-end, crash-lock), dimensions, and the artwork with Pantone references locked.
- Laminate and embellishment, and whether FSC is required (quote it as standard).
- Quantity with the reorder forecast, and whether digital or offset is preferred for run one.
- Market: leave the label space for EU / UK recycling marks and the allergen list at artwork stage.
Then check the answers against how to evaluate a China packaging supplier. The formats, finishes and specification tables are on paper and carton packaging; a worked bill of packaging with the carton line in it is on the skincare packaging solution.
Vella is a Guangzhou-based beauty packaging solutions provider — a sourcing partner, not a factory — that fixes board grade, grammage and Pantone references in the spec, routes the carton to a digital or offset partner converter matched to your run size with FSC quoted as standard, fits the white dummy to the actual bottle before the die is cut, and accepts the run at ΔE ≤1.5 under D65 against the signed proof. Primary packs come from vetted partner factories operating to ISO 22716 / GMP.
