Nail polish bottles:
glass sizes, brush caps, solvent compatibility, MOQ and sourcing from China.

Nail polish is a high-volatility solvent formula — ethyl acetate and butyl acetate carrying nitrocellulose and pigment — and that single fact decides the packaging before any shape does. The solvent swells or dissolves PET, PS, AS, PMMA and most standard gaskets and lifts ordinary inks. So the bottle is glass, the cap is PP, the brush is solvent-resistant, and the seal in the cap is the part that keeps the polish from turning to gum on shelf. Here is how to specify, test and source it.

Short answer

A nail polish bottle is glass with a PP screw cap carrying a cone seal and a nylon-bristle brush on a PP stem, because the solvent system (ethyl and butyl acetate) attacks PET, PS, AS, PMMA and standard gaskets. Common sizes are 5, 10 and 15 ml on stock (public-mould) glass, from about 500 pieces undecorated and ~2,000 printed; made-to-order glass in your own shape carries a 30,000+ piece floor and 30–60 days from mould approval.

Why the solvent decides the material

Nail polish and nail-polish remover sit in the same compatibility class as perfume: high-volatility solvent that permeates and swells many plastics and rubbers, evaporates through a poor seal, and lifts ordinary inks. The formula × packaging compatibility matrix gives the rule directly: glass bottle plus brush cap with a cone seal in the cap and solvent-resistant bristles; for acetone remover, glass with a purpose-made inner plug and cap liner. No stock plastic bottle is acceptable for either, regardless of supplier assurance. In practice that means:

  • Bottle — soda-lime flint or high-flint glass, press- or blow-formed, thick base for stability.
  • Cap — PP, which tolerates acetate solvents; ABS or plated outer shells are fitted over a PP inner cap so nothing plated touches the polish.
  • Seal — a moulded cone or ring in the PP cap that seats on the glass neck bore; no elastomer liner unless it is a solvent-grade or PTFE-faced compound.
  • Brush — nylon bristles set in a PP or metal ferrule on a PP stem; length set so the tips sit just above the base at full fill.
  • Mixing ball — stainless steel, optional; specify count and diameter.
  • Decoration — screen print with solvent-resistant ink, hot stamp, frosting or spray on the outside only; every decorated face is wiped with the polish and with alcohol before approval.

Weight2–3× the weight of an equivalent plastic bottleInternal suspension packing; breakage allowance agreed up front

The neck vocabulary — T, E, I, S, X dimensions — and why the closure factory needs the full drawing are on the neck finish and closure standards reference; glass grades and defect allowances are on glass bottle specifications.

MOQ, mould and lead time by route

Nail polish glass is one of the most heavily tooled public-mould categories in China, so a stock shape rarely needs a mould. The gate is the decoration minimum, then the made-to-order glass floor if you insist on your own shape. Figures below are indicative ranges via partner factories; the cross-category view is on the MOQ index 2026.

The glass mould itself is cheap — a few hundred to a few thousand dollars — so the mould fee is never the reason to avoid custom glass. The 30,000-piece furnace floor is. Detail on why that floor exists is in custom glass bottle mould cost and MOQ.

QC thresholds a nail polish bottle is signed against

The glass battery below is the same one used for serum and toner glass; the solvent rows are what make a nail polish order different. All of it sits under the four gates and golden-sample rule on our QC standards page.

Vella is a Guangzhou-based beauty packaging solutions provider — a sourcing partner, not a factory — that specifies, sources, samples, quality-controls and ships nail polish glass, caps and brushes from vetted partner factories operating to ISO 22716 / GMP, against the thresholds above and a signed golden sample. The method is on how we work; the questions to ask any supplier are in how to evaluate a China packaging supplier.

Frequently asked

Why are nail polish bottles always glass?
Because the solvent system — ethyl acetate and butyl acetate — swells or dissolves PET, PS, AS, PMMA and most standard gaskets, and lifts ordinary inks. Glass is the only fully safe bulk-contact material for high-volatility solvent formulas. The cap is PP, which tolerates acetate solvents, with a cone seal moulded into it, and the brush is solvent-resistant nylon on a PP stem.
What sizes do nail polish bottles come in?
Stock (public-mould) nail polish glass runs 5, 10 and 15 ml as the common sizes, with 20–30 ml used for base and top coats as a typical partner-factory range. Capacity is specified as brim-full ±5% at 20°C with a fill line and headspace on the drawing, and the brush length is set so the bristle tips sit just above the base at full fill.
What is the MOQ for nail polish bottles from China?
On stock glass with a stock PP cap and brush, from about 500 pieces undecorated where a partner factory holds stock, around 2,000 with a screen print or hot stamp, and 2,000–5,000 per shape for frosting or sprayed colour. Made-to-order glass in your own shape carries an industry floor of 30,000 to 100,000–200,000 pieces because a furnace runs continuously. Plated cap shells sit at around 10,000.
How long does a nail polish bottle order take?
Stock glass in a warehouse ships in 7–10 days; a glass run takes 30–60 days; screen print adds 5–7 days and sprayed colour is a 30–40 day cycle at a second factory. Made-to-order glass is 30–60 days from mould approval. Multiply the quoted cycle by 1.3, add 15 days across Chinese New Year, then sea freight of 18–25 days to the US West Coast or 30–35 to Northern Europe.
How is nail polish packaging tested for solvent compatibility?
The cap, cone seal, brush and stem sit in the actual polish at 48°C for 30 days beside ambient and cold controls, watched for swelling, softening, bristle loss, colour bleed, odour change and gumming at the neck. Filled bottles are also inverted for 24 hours and held at 45°C, vacuum-tested at −0.08 MPa for 15 minutes with weight loss under 0.5%, and the printed face is wiped with polish and with 75% alcohol to confirm the ink holds.
Can a plated or metal cap be used on a nail polish bottle?
Yes, as an outer shell only. The part that touches the polish is a PP inner cap with the cone seal; an ABS plated shell, an aluminium shell or a sprayed cover is fitted over it. Plated parts must never contact the bulk or the skin, and electroplating carries its own floor of around 10,000 pieces, so first orders usually use a sprayed or hot-stamped PP cap.
