Buy wholesale stock flacons and decorate them unless you have a shape that decoration cannot deliver and the volume to amortise it. A stock 30 / 50 / 100 ml flacon starts at 500–1,000 pieces with no tooling and ships in 15–25 days; with screen print about 2,000, with sprayed custom colour 3,000–5,000. A private glass mould costs RMB 2,500–4,000 (≈USD 350–555) per set, or RMB 16,000–32,000 (≈USD 2,200–4,450) for a 4–8 cavity set, needs 10,000+ pieces via partner lines (30,000–200,000 at most furnaces) and a 90–120 day programme.
The three routes, not two
The wholesale-versus-custom question hides a middle route that most indie launches should take. Wholesale is a stock flacon bought as-is; custom mould is your own shape; between them sits stock glass, decorated to look bespoke — frosting, spray colour, screen print, hot stamp, a custom cap. In terms of what the customer sees, the middle route covers most of the distance to a private mould at a fraction of the minimum. The MOQ index puts the same logic across every category; here it is for perfume glass specifically.
| Question | Wholesale stock flacon | Stock flacon + decoration | Private mould (own shape) |
|---|---|---|---|
| What is yours | The label or sleeve | Colour, print, cap, collar tone, box | The glass shape itself |
| Indicative minimum | 500–1,000 pcs | ~2,000 print · 3,000–5,000 sprayed · ~10,000 plated collar or cap | 10,000+ via partner lines; 30,000–200,000 made-to-order furnace floor |
| Tooling | None | Screen ≈RMB 0.1 per colour; hot-stamp die small one-off; spray colour set-up per shape | RMB 2,500–4,000 (≈USD 350–555) per set; 4–8 cavity RMB 16,000–32,000 (≈USD 2,200–4,450); programmes commonly USD 8,000–20,000 |
| Lead time, factory gate | 15–25 days; samples 7–10 | +5–7 days print; 30–40 days sprayed after sample approval | 45–60 days tooling + 30–60 days glass; plan 90–120 days |
| Who owns the shape | The factory (public mould); others can buy it | The factory owns the glass; your decoration is yours | You; the factory holds the mould in custody for your orders only |
| Exclusivity | None | Strong in practice: colour, cap and box carry the identity | Complete |
| Choose it when | Testing a scent, discovery sets, under ~1,000 units | Most first launches, 1,000–5,000 sets | A hero shape with volume to amortise tooling in 12–18 months |
What "wholesale" buys you — and what it does not
Wholesale stock flacons are the entry point: public-mould 30, 50 and 100 ml shapes in clear or frosted glass with a stock silver or gold pump and collar, available from 500–1,000 pieces with samples in 7–10 days. A pressure-sensitive label or sleeve carries the brand from about 100–500 pieces and is the cheapest route of all. What wholesale does not give you is any exclusivity on the shape and, unless you decorate, any colour. It is the right answer for testing a scent, for a discovery layer of 2 ml vials and 10 ml travel sprays, and for anyone whose first order is below about 1,000 units. On the pump, the wholesale route does not lower the bar: the pump is still where fragrance packaging fails, and even a stock pump should be fragrance-grade and tested for atomisation — see crimp vs screw pump.
Decoration: how far a stock flacon can go
Decoration is set up per shape and per process, so each one has its own floor. Printing is cheap and colour is expensive; metallic tones on caps and collars are the most expensive of all because the plating line is configured for your tone alone.
| Process on stock glass | Set-up that drives the minimum | Realistic minimum | Indicative add-on cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pressure-sensitive label or sleeve | Print run only | ~100–500 | Lowest of all routes; full-colour artwork on a stock flacon |
| Hot stamp | A die, cut once; ≤2 passes combined with screen print | Small one-off | RMB 0.4 per design (≈USD 0.055) |
| Screen print | A screen per colour; cylinder = one colour, shaped flacon = two or more | ~2,000 | RMB 0.1 per colour (≈USD 0.014) |
| Frosting (acid-etch) | Etch pass on finished clear glass; frost stops below the thread | Moderate; usually with the sprayed run | Per bottle, by size |
| Spray coating (matte, gloss, gradient, inside-spray tint) | Spray line set up, run and cleaned down for your tone | 3,000–5,000 on clear perfume glass | RMB 0.5–1.1 per bottle (≈USD 0.07–0.15) |
| Electroplating / vacuum metallising (caps, collars) | Plating line for your tone; ~6 h per cycle | ~10,000; exterior parts only | Medium to high |
A stock flacon frosted, sprayed in a gradient, screen-printed and closed with a custom sprayed ABS cap in a hot-stamped rigid box is, to the customer, a custom bottle. The colour discipline that makes it read as one family is in matching flacon, pump, cap, collar and box; the process parameters are on the decoration reference.
When a private mould is actually justified
A glass mould is not expensive — a hand mould is about USD 350, a single-cavity automatic mould about USD 555, a 4–8 cavity set USD 2,200–4,450 — and glass tooling is cheaper than any plastic injection tool. The barrier is the run, not the steel. A furnace does not stop, so a made-to-order bottle must justify a machine changeover: most glassworks quote 30,000–200,000 pieces, and even short-run partner lines want 10,000+. Add 45–60 days of tooling before 30–60 days of glass, and a private flacon is a five-to-six-month programme that suits a hero product with a shape decoration cannot deliver — a thick press-formed base, a faceted or sculptural body — and the volume to sell it. Ownership, custody and the 30/40/30 payment schedule belong in the contract; the clauses are on the mould cost and ownership reference, and the glass grades and QC limits on glass bottle specifications.
A decision rule for a first fragrance
- First order under 1,000 units — wholesale stock flacon, stock pump and collar, label or hot stamp, rigid box from 1,000–2,000.
- 1,000–5,000 sets — stock flacon decorated: frost or spray, screen print, custom sprayed cap, stock collar. This is where most launches should sit.
- 10,000+ pieces and a shape only a mould can make — private mould, with the route-by-route figures in custom perfume bottle MOQ, mould cost and lead time.
Whichever route, the QC is the same: atomisation to a target card, 0.1–0.2 ml per shot, ≥1,500 actuations, −0.08 MPa vacuum leak, on the QC standards page. The specification layer is on fragrance bottles and the fragrance packaging solution; the questions that separate a stock shape sold as custom from the real thing are on how to evaluate a China packaging supplier.
Vella is a Guangzhou-based beauty packaging solutions provider — a sourcing partner, not a factory. We route stock flacons, decoration and, where the volume justifies it, private glass moulds to vetted partner factories operating to ISO 22716 / GMP, and we say plainly which route your volume supports. The component-by-component programme is on our perfume bottle supplier page.
